Known as the \u201cIsland of the Gods\u201d, Miyajima is most famous for Itsukushima Shrine and its unmissable Otorii gate. Originally built in 593 CE, the vermillion gate stands at 24.2 meters tall (almost 80 feet) and weighs approximately 60 tons. At high tide, the gate appears to float on the water. At low tide, however, visitors are able to walk across the river bed to get close to the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miyajima was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996, and has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to the island. Aside from Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima boasts several other sightseeing locations, including Senjokaku Temple, Daishouin Temple, and Mt.
