Hijiyama Army Cemetery
The Hijiyama Military Cemetery is located on a small mountain and contains gravestones for approximately 4,500 soldiers who died in wars spanning from a domestic war in the 19th century up to World War II. When observing the city from the hill, you can imagine what Hiroshima was like as a military city.
Various Wartime Locations
The most frequently asked question from guests who visit Peace Memorial Park is “Why was an atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima?” We will visit a few locations to try to explain the answer.
North side of Hiroshima Castle
The castle was built for Samurai Lord Mouri over 400 years ago. It was a national treasure before the atomic bomb was dropped, so you can imagine how devastating it must have been to witness the destruction of this beautiful castle.
Peace Memorial Park / Atomic Bomb Dome
The Atomic Bomb Dome was originally a modern building that displayed various products from Hiroshima Prefecture. Although there were disagreements about whether to preserve the building or not, it was ultimately registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996. It remains standing as a symbol of the tragedy of war.
Peace Memorial Museum
The Peace Memorial Museum tells the history of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, and many notes and photos of atomic bomb survivors are displayed. It conveys the reality of the atomic bombing and sends a message urging for world peace. Leaders of 2023 G7 Hiroshima Summit and other countries all over the world have visited here.
Orizuru Tower
This building is located right next to the Atomic Bomb Dome. You can feel the desire for peace at the observation deck that overlooks Peace Memorial Park. They have plenty of souvenirs, and you can even experience folding your own Orizuru (origami crane).
